Round 7 2025 – Supercars Championship
Will Brown returned from his NASCAR cameo in the United States with a trio of strong drives to hold onto second in the drivers championship with one round remaining in the Supercars Sprint Cup
Race 20 – P10
A competitive showing in Friday’s dual half-hour practice sessions didn’t translate into a strong qualifying result for the team, with both cars locked out of the top 10 and Will down in 20th. A sizzling start got car 1 up to 16th, and strong forward momentum had Will running 11th before the bulk of the field contemplated their first stops. Will’s car was serviced at the end of lap 21, dropping him to 17th, but he was rapid in the second stint to recover to 10th in an impressive 10-place turnaround, by far the most positions gained in the short Friday race.
Race 21 – P4
Work overnight ensured Will had a fast qualifying car for his first top-10 shootout appearance since Perth. Eighth on the grid ensured his eyes were forward, but a hit from behind on the first lap dropped him back to ninth. A safety car on lap 13 saw him enter pit lane for his first stop, limiting strategic choices, and contact with Will Davison had the reigning champion slapped with a five second penalty that coloured the rest of his race. He ran long, until the end of lap 51, to benefit from the clear air of the lead for five laps before his second stop, but his penalty had him rejoin ninth, from where fourth was the best he could finish.
Race 22 – P2
Sunday brought another qualifying improvement, though Will lamented being unable to put a complete lap together in the shootout, leaving him seventh and with another fightback ahead of him. He had tremendous race pace, however, and was running second behind teammate Broc Feeney after just 23 laps, setting him up for a battle for victory. He stopped at the end of lap 24 to undercut his way closer to the lead car and ran close through the middle stint, but team rules prevented him trying to undercut his way into first place with his second stop, which came after Feeney’s service, on lap 50. He pushed his teammate hard for victory ultimately had to settle for second after another strong recovery drive.
“Overall it was a good way to finish the weekend, but I’m a little bit disappointed overall with the whole round. I just don’t feel that I maximised qualifying again. I struggled on Friday, but we made some really good progression throughout the weekend, and we got second in that last race, but when you’re starting seventh or eighth you’re doing a lot of hard work and burning your tyres up to get back up the front. It was awesome for the team to get a one-two, but I’ve just got to pull my finger out and do a better job”
Round 8 of the Supercars Championship takes place on 8–10 August with the Ipswich Super 440 at Queensland Raceway.
